Employers: Get Ready for Mandatory Benefits-in-Kind Payrolling
HMRC is urging employers to prepare now for mandatory payrolling of benefits in kind from April 2027.
The first phase will cover company cars, car fuel, vans, van fuel and medical benefits. Most other benefits will follow from April 2028.
Employers should review their existing benefits, check that their payroll software will support real-time reporting and start planning how the changes will affect employees.
If you provide company cars, medical insurance or other employee benefits, now is the time to review your payroll arrangements.
VAT Update Capital Goods Scheme Simplified
From 29 July 2026, HMRC has simplified the VAT Capital Goods Scheme.
Computers and computer equipment are no longer covered by the scheme.
The threshold for land, buildings and civil engineering works has increased from £250,000 to £600,000 (excluding VAT).
The changes are intended to reduce the administrative burden for VAT-registered businesses.
UK E-Invoicing Businesses Should Start Planning Ahead
The government has announced that Peppol will be the core interoperability network for the UK's planned e-invoicing system.
The announcement provides businesses and software developers with greater clarity as the government works towards an e-invoicing mandate in 2029.
Although the mandate is still several years away, businesses should consider whether their accounting and invoicing systems are capable of supporting more automated digital processes.
Planning early could make the eventual transition significantly easier.

Employment Rights Changes - Employers Should Prepare Now
Further changes under the Employment Rights Act 2025 are scheduled for October 2026 and January 2027.
From October, employers will face changes relating to workplace sexual harassment protections and trade union access rights.
From 1 January 2027, the qualifying period for ordinary unfair dismissal protection is due to reduce from two years to six months.
Businesses should review employment contracts, HR procedures, probation arrangements and workplace policies ahead of the changes.
If you employ staff, now is a good time to review your HR and payroll processes.
